Anatomy of a Logo

Logos serve as designs to remind us of a company. In logo design its important to remember that the logo is what is going to tie your brand to a visual representation. It is important that your logo is distinctive as well as visually pleasing.

A logo is a visual representation of your brand to customers

Don't Try to Do Too Much

There can be a temptation with your logo to make it say everything about your brand there is to say, but this is not necessary. You don't need to show every service or product your company offers in a logo. For example, Ford doesn't need a picture of a car in their logo yet most people who sees the logo can associate it with the car company. It's better to have a simple logo that a manifesto, simple logos are more recognizable and create better brand awareness.

Think Typography

The font chosen should agree to the message you are trying to send through your brand. Font comes in different shapes and sizes and each font creates a different feeling in the viewer. Bold block letter fonts communicate a different brand message than cursive style fonts. When deciding on a font, think about what you want to say and what the font says. Make sure the two agree with each other.

Consider using only font for you logo - see above about keeping it simple. Text alone could be more recognizable than text plus an image or an image alone.

Avoid Clichés

A good logo is timeless. There are always new and current fads that come to logo design, but fads come and go. Its important to not simply copy the current design trend of the day and apply that to your design. The main reason for this is if your logo looks like every other one it's not going to have that noticeable pop. Customers will have difficulty identifying your logo and attributing it to your brand.

Versatility

A good logo is versatile - that is to say it works on a number of different medias. Your logo should work just as well printed onto private label cosmetics as it does on paper, on a store sign and on a computer. A good tip is to work with a logo in black and white while designing it and then adding color to it. Color can be very subjective and can appear different on different mediums. Worrying about color in the initial design can detract from its form and shape.
